If you aren’t used to driving vans, you may find it intimidating the first time. Modern vans are easy to drive –they have small steering wheels, power steering and gear sticks on the dashboard. There are still a few things to remember when driving a Warrington hire van for the first time.
Driving A Warrington Hire Van For The First Time?
Speed Limits
Van speed limits are much lower than those for cars:
- On a motorway: 70mph
- On a dual carriageway: 60mph
- On a single carriageway: 50mph
- In a built-up area: 20-30mph
These are for all cans except car-derived vans with a maximum gross weight under 2t – car limits apply to them.
Size Restrictions
Most vans are 2 metres high or more, so they will not fit under a car park height barrier. Find out the height of your van and look out for height restrictions!
Also, beware of 6′ 6″ width restrictions. Luton vans and a lot of panel vans won’t fit!
Mirrors
As most vans haven’t got rear-view mirrors in the middle, make sure your wing mirrors are adjusted before you set off.
Driving A Van
Modern vans are powerful, with power steering and car-style gearboxes – but a loaded van is slower to stop, longer, wider, heavier and less stable than a car so don’t get carried away.
Parking a Van
Parking a van can seem hard at first. You have no rear-view mirror or rear windows so you can’t see behind you. Use the wing mirrors, put your head out the side window or ask someone to guide you. Never be afraid to get out and take a look.
