How To Drive On Flooded Roads

According to the AA, one in three flood-related deaths occurs in vehicles. With this in mind do you know how to drive safely on flooded roads?

How To Drive On Flooded Roads

Just a small amount of water in an engine can wreck it and cost thousands. Here are some tips to stay safe on through the roads.

Drive slowly

Reducing speed while on a flooded road is paramount, as tyres are more likely to lose grip. This can cause loss of control, through aquaplaning. If this happens, reduce speed steadily and hold the steering wheel lightly until you feel the tyres regaining grip.

Before you set off, test the depth of water. Don’t drive through flood water deeper than 10cm and don’t stop unless unavoidable.

Don’t make a splash

You can be fined for splashing pedestrians. Avoid puddles or reduce speed.

Test your brakes

As soon as you leave a flooded road, test the brakes. This dries them and keeps them working.

Stay in the car

If your car breaks down, pull over and stay inside it unless you are on a motorway hard shoulder. In that case, put on the hazards and find a safe place to stop. Don’t open the bonnet: exposing the engine to rain can break it.

Use your lights

If visibility goes under 100 metres, turn on the headlights. You can use fog lights if you’re struggling. It’s important to turn them off as soon as visibility improves, as fog lights dazzle other drivers.

Don’t stop moving

Keeping your car moving is the most important tip. Water can enter the exhaust pipe and cause damage. If you stop, keep engine revs up to prevent seizing.
