Driving a hire van in hot weather brings different challenges from the winter driving most people plan for. Summer in the North West can switch from drizzle to a heatwave within a week. So, if you collect van hire in Warrington on a sweltering day, a little preparation keeps you safe and protects your load.
How Heat Changes the Way a Van Drives
A loaded van asks more of its tyres, brakes and cooling than a car does. Hot tarmac, a heavy load and a long motorway run find any weakness. Therefore, take the first few miles gently and leave more room to slow down.
Check the Tyres
Heat and low pressure are a poor pairing. So, walk around the van and look for anything soft or damaged before you set off. Also, open the doors for a few minutes if the van has stood in the sun, so trapped heat can escape.
Protecting Your Load in a Hire Van in Hot Weather
The load area gets very warm when parked in full sun. Items that melt, warp or spoil should go in last and come out first. For example, plants, candles, electronics and adhesives all suffer in heat. In addition, a light-coloured blanket over delicate items reflects some warmth.
Choosing the Right Van
For long summer trips, a long wheelbase high roof van lets you spread the load and keep tall items upright. As a result, air moves more freely around your belongings. Every van stays within 3.5 tonnes, so a car licence covers it.
Routes, Breaks and Timing
Long runs in the heat are tiring, so plan breaks and carry water. The official Highway Code advice on fitness to drive stresses rest. Our guide to driving a hire van on the motorway also helps. Meanwhile, customers near Lymm van hire areas enjoy a short run to the depot.
