Van Hire for a Car Boot Sale or Summer Fair Stall

The car boot and summer fair season runs hard through August across Cheshire and south Manchester, and van hire for a car boot sale is one of those jobs where the right vehicle changes the whole day. Stallholders are working to an early start, a fixed pitch size and a tight unloading window, none of which suits a car with the back seats folded down. Anyone booking van hire in Warrington for a weekend of selling is really booking three things at once, which are transport, a covered store and somewhere dry to put stock that has not sold.

Why A Van Beats A Car Boot For A Car Boot

The obvious advantage is volume, but it is not the important one. The important one is that a van lets you load the night before and leave everything locked and dry until the alarm goes off. That single change turns a frantic pre dawn hour into a fifteen minute departure. It also means you are not repacking a wet car at four in the afternoon when the weather turns, because everything goes back into the same space it came out of. Our vehicles all sit at 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight or under and drive on a standard category B car licence, so there is no licence obstacle to using something considerably more practical than the family estate.

Picking A Van That Fits A Standard Pitch

Most car boot pitches are sold as a car sized space, sometimes with an option to pay for a double. A very long van can leave you paying for two pitches or parked awkwardly across the boundary with the stall next door, which is not the way to start a morning. A short wheelbase medium roof van is the sweet spot for this work. It occupies roughly the footprint of a large car, so it sits comfortably in a single pitch, while the extra roof height gives you enough standing room to work inside it and enough volume to carry far more stock than the length suggests.

Loading In Selling Order Rather Than Packing Order

The instinct is to load the van tidily. The better approach is to load it backwards. Whatever comes out first at the pitch goes in last, which usually means the trestle table, the tarpaulin and the folding chairs sit right by the rear doors. Boxes of stock go in ahead of them, grouped by table rather than by type, so you are not opening six boxes to set out one section. Anything fragile travels high and towards the front where it is least likely to shift. Ten minutes of thought at home saves half an hour of shuffling in a field at six in the morning while everyone around you is already selling.

Early Starts And Our Opening Hours

Car boots start early and most are done by lunchtime. Our depot is open Monday to Saturday from 8am until 4pm and closed on Sunday, which shapes how you book. If your sale is on a Sunday, collect on the Saturday morning, load at home during Saturday afternoon and return the van on the Monday. If it is a Saturday sale, you will want the van from the Friday. Either way, the van is yours overnight, which is the whole point. Booking a day either side of the event rather than trying to compress it into the day itself is the difference between a calm morning and a bad one.

Setting Up Around Stockton Heath And Grappenhall

Plenty of the summer fairs and church fetes we supply vans for sit in village settings with real access constraints. Customers using Stockton Heath van hire for a fete on the green are usually dealing with a narrow entrance and a soft grass surface, and customers around Grappenhall van hire face much the same. On soft ground, a shorter van with a shorter wheelbase is far less likely to become a problem after rain, and it is much easier to turn on a field without leaving ruts that the organisers will remember you by.

Weather, Shade And Looking After Stock

An August van parked in full sun becomes an oven by mid morning. If you are selling anything that suffers in heat, and candles, chocolate, vinyl records and anything with adhesive all do, park the van so the load area faces away from the sun and prop the doors open once you have set up. Keeping stock in the shade of the van rather than inside it is usually the better answer on a hot day. A tarpaulin over the tailgate makes a serviceable awning and gives you somewhere to retreat to that is not the driver’s seat. Our notes on van hire for events and pop ups cover the venue day detail in more depth.

What To Do With What Does Not Sell

Very few stallholders sell everything, and the end of the day is where a van earns its hire twice over. Unsold stock goes straight back in without sorting, which means you are away from the pitch quickly rather than repacking a car boot in a queue of traffic leaving the field. Decide in advance whether the leftovers are going home, to a charity shop or to a household waste site, because that determines the order things go back in. If you are doing another sale the following weekend, leaving the load largely intact and hiring again is often less work than unpacking and repacking twice.

Tell us the date, the pitch size and roughly how much stock you are carrying and we will point you at the right vehicle rather than the biggest one. Call us on 01925 396 222 to check availability for your weekend.
