A rear view mirror is something most car drivers take for granted. In many vans, however, a solid bulkhead or a full load blocks the view behind. That can feel strange at first, but it is easy to manage. If you are booking van hire in Warrington, these tips will help you drive with confidence.
Driving Without a Rear View Mirror
Without a rear view mirror, your door mirrors become your main source of information. So, set them up carefully before you move. Each mirror should show the lane beside you, with just a sliver of the van’s side at the inner edge. Then check them often, every few seconds on busy roads.
Using a Reversing Camera
If your van has a reversing camera, get to know the screen before you set off. It shows what sits directly behind you when parking. However, never rely on it alone. Instead, use it together with both door mirrors.
Checking Blind Spots
A van has larger blind spots than a car. Therefore, glance over your shoulder before changing lanes or pulling out. Also, leave a bigger gap to the vehicle ahead, which gives you more time to react. The official Highway Code rules on using the road cover mirror checks in detail.
Reversing Safely
Reverse slowly, and stop if you are unsure. If you have a helper, ask them to guide you back from a safe spot. In tight places, it is often easier to reverse in on arrival than to back out later.
