A bank holiday weekend looks like the perfect time to move home. You get an extra day off, friends are free to help, and nobody needs to book leave. Yet the same thinking means thousands of other people plan the same thing. So vans, helpers and even keys need more planning than on a normal weekend. This guide explains how to plan a three-day move with van hire in Warrington from our Cockhedge depot.
Why a Bank Holiday Weekend Move Needs More Planning

The biggest difference is the calendar. Banks, solicitors and estate agents close on the bank holiday Monday. As a result, a sale rarely completes on that day, because the money cannot move. Most completions instead happen on the Friday before, or after the weekend.
That shapes the whole plan. If you complete on the Friday, you might collect keys in the afternoon and move over the weekend. On the other hand, if you complete the following week, the long weekend becomes your packing time. Either way, confirm the completion date before you book a van. A van booked for the wrong weekend helps nobody.
Booking the Van for a Bank Holiday Weekend
House moves cluster around long weekends, so the larger vans go first. If you know the date, book as early as you can. Booking selected vehicles at least two weeks ahead also saves 10%, as our van hire special offers page explains.
Think about the length of hire too. Our depot opens Monday to Saturday from 8am to 4pm, and we close on Sundays. However, the bank holiday Monday can change the usual pattern. So agree the collection and return times when you book. Many customers find a longer hire takes the pressure off the whole weekend.
Choosing the Right Van for the Move
For a family home with heavy furniture, a Luton van with tail lift is the usual choice. The tail lift raises washing machines, fridge freezers and wardrobes to floor level. That saves backs, especially when your helpers are friends rather than removal crew.
For a flat or a smaller house, a long wheelbase panel van may be enough. Our guide to moving house van hire helps you match the van to the number of rooms. In short, one trip in a bigger van usually beats two trips in a smaller one. Traffic on a long weekend makes every extra run slower.
Measure the awkward pieces before you book. A corner sofa, a range cooker or an American fridge freezer can decide the van on its own. If any item is close to the size of a doorway, check the route out of the house as well. A quick call to the depot with those sizes saves a wasted trip on the busiest weekend of the season.
A Three-Day Plan That Works
Use the Friday evening for the last of the packing. Label each box with its room, and keep a bag of essentials aside. Then collect the van early on the Saturday. Load the heavy items first, and keep the bed frames and kettle near the doors.
Saturday is the main moving day. If you can, unload the big pieces into the new home the same afternoon. That leaves the Sunday for smaller loads, cleaning and assembling furniture. Meanwhile, the Monday becomes a buffer for anything that overruns. A bank holiday weekend move works best when the last day is spare rather than packed.
Plan the roads too. The M6, M62 and M56 all run close to Warrington, and they get busy on long weekends. Heading out early in the morning avoids the worst of it. Likewise, try to finish driving before the late afternoon rush on the final day.
Moving In and Around Great Sankey
Many of our weekend moves start or finish in the newer estates west of the town centre. Our page on van hire Great Sankey covers that side of Warrington. Estate roads there are often narrow, with cars parked on both sides. So check where the van can stop before the day.
It also helps to warn the neighbours. On a bank holiday weekend, more people are at home and more cars sit on the street. A friendly note a few days before often frees up a space outside the door. If not, parking your own car in the space the night before can keep it clear for the van.
Moving later in the summer? Our guide to planning an August bank holiday move covers the extra points. For example, it looks at heat, holiday traffic and longer daylight hours.
Collecting the Van at Cockhedge
Our depot sits on Tilley Street at the main entrance to Cockhedge Shopping Centre. Bring your photocard driving licence and a DVLA check code when you collect. Create the code the night before, so it is fresh. There is no deposit on most vehicles, and every van we hire is 3.5 tonnes or under.
You can also leave your car in our free secure car park while the van is out. That helps when your own car is full of boxes heading the other way. When you return the van, sweep out the load area and take a last look for screws, remote controls and keys. Small items often hide in the corners after a busy bank holiday weekend. Check the bank holiday dates for the year before you settle on a weekend.
Tell us the date, the size of the home and where you are moving to. We will then match you to the right van from a fleet of over 70. Call the depot on 01925 396 222 to book your move, or use our contact us page to send the details.
