How to Drive a Hire Van in Winter – Tips for Safe Cold Weather Journeys

As the colder months arrive, road conditions can change quickly and without much warning. Driving any large vehicle in winter requires more care than you might need in summer, and a hire van is no different. Whether you are moving house, completing a delivery, or tackling a work project that cannot wait for better weather, understanding how to handle a hire van safely in winter conditions makes your journey considerably less stressful. For anyone relying on van hire in Warrington during the colder months, a little preparation before you set off goes a long way.

Before You Drive – Checks Worth Doing at Collection

When you collect your hire van, take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the vehicle before pulling out of the depot. This is always good practice, but in winter it matters more than usual. Check that the windscreen, mirrors, and windows are clear before you move off, and make sure you know where the heater controls, rear demister, and wiper settings are before you need them on the road.

Check the windscreen washer fluid reservoir if you can access it, and make sure the washer jets are working. In winter, road spray from gritted surfaces can coat a windscreen quickly, and running out of washer fluid while driving is both dangerous and avoidable. If the vehicle has any lights that appear to be not working when you complete your pre-drive checks, report this to the team at the depot before setting off rather than after. Our post on what to check before driving a hire van covers the full pre-drive routine in detail and is worth reading before any hire, but particularly in winter.

It is also sensible to keep a few practical items in the cab during a winter hire. An ice scraper and de-icer are useful if the van has been parked for any period. A warm layer, a charged phone, and some drinking water are sensible precautions if there is any chance of a delay or breakdown on longer journeys. You cannot control what other drivers do or what the weather does — but you can control how prepared you are if something unexpected happens.

Adjusting Your Driving for Winter Conditions

The most important adjustment to make when driving a hire van in winter is to slow down and increase the distance between yourself and the vehicle in front. Stopping distances on wet, icy, or snow-covered roads are significantly longer than in dry conditions — for ice, they can be up to ten times longer than normal. A van is heavier than a car, which means it takes longer to stop even under ideal conditions. In poor weather, that difference becomes even more pronounced.

Smooth inputs matter. Steering, braking, and acceleration should all be gradual rather than sharp. Sudden movements on a slippery surface are the most common cause of a vehicle losing traction, and a van’s higher centre of gravity makes it more sensitive to this than a lower car. When approaching a corner or junction, reduce your speed well before you reach it rather than braking as you turn. Gentle, progressive braking in a straight line before the corner gives you far more control than trying to slow down mid-turn.

On hills, try to maintain momentum going uphill rather than stopping partway up, which can make it very difficult to pull away again on a slippery surface. Going downhill, use a lower gear to help control your speed rather than relying entirely on the brakes, which can overheat or cause wheel lock on a steep descent in icy conditions.

Dealing with Poor Visibility

Winter weather frequently reduces visibility through a combination of fog, heavy rain, sleet, and low sun at certain times of day. In all of these conditions, make sure your lights are on. Dipped headlights improve your visibility to other road users significantly, even during daytime driving in heavy rain or fog. Use your rear fog light only when visibility drops below 100 metres — in lighter conditions, it can actually dazzle the driver behind you and cause more problems than it solves.

Keep your windscreen as clear as possible throughout the journey. The van’s heater and demister are your primary tools for this, and it is worth running the demister for a few minutes before setting off to clear any condensation fully. If your windscreen mists up during the journey, resist the temptation to wipe it with your hand — use the demister and slightly open a window if needed, as outside air is usually drier than the warm air inside the cab.

Plan your route before you leave, particularly in severe weather. Check road conditions and any weather warnings for the areas you will be travelling through. If conditions deteriorate significantly during your journey, it is always better to stop safely and wait than to press on through conditions that feel beyond your comfort level. There is no load worth a serious accident.

Returning the Van After a Winter Journey

When you return your hire van to the depot, take a moment to check the exterior for any damage before handing back the keys. This is standard practice at the end of any hire, but in winter it is worth being particularly thorough around the lower panels and wheel arches, where road spray from gritted surfaces can obscure minor marks that were not there when you collected the vehicle. Reporting anything you have noticed during the hire — unusual handling, warning lights, or any contact with another vehicle or object — at the point of return rather than afterwards keeps everything straightforward and transparent for both parties.
