Snowy conditions make driving a real challenge. It is therefore crucial to prepare yourself before embarking on a Warrington Van Hire rental van journey driving in snow.
Driving in Snow
- Wear comfortable, dry footwear
- Accelerate gently, use fewer revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as you can
- Move off in second gear so you reduce wheel slippage.
- Get the speed right and maintain a safe stopping distance between you and the vehicle in front, leaving 10 times the normal gap
- Prepare for going uphill by leaving room in front so you maintain a constant speed as you climb
- Use a lower gear for going downhill. Try to avoid braking, making sure to leave plenty of space to the vehicle in front
- When approaching a bend, brake before turning the steering wheel. If you lose grip do not panic; take your foot off the accelerator and point the wheels in the direction you want to go
- When driving in snow, use dipped headlights. Daytime running lights are not enough, because they don’t always light up the rear of your car.
- If your visibility drops below 100m, put your fog lights on. Turn them off as soon as visibility improves.
- If the road is not gritted, be wary of driving in wheel tracks left by other vehicles. Compressed snow soon turns to ice
- Operate controls – brakes, steering, accelerator and gear changing smoothly and slowly
